AI Characters in Hollywood Movies
Introduction
AI is currently one of the most popular buzzwords, though in most cases it is misused. There has always been something mystical and exciting about human-like computer systems. This theme is present in dozens of movies. AI shown in them is very prophetic and forward-looking in comparison to the current status quo. In this article, I'd like to take a look at the most popular and memorable AI characters from Hollywood movies.
"AI" by Steven Spielberg
The main character in this movie is a prototype Mecha child called David. He is an artificial intelligence based creation whose ultimate goal is, as he states, "to love and to be loved." The main programmed purpose of this Mech was to give relief and a sense of parenthood to childless couples.
He can get attached to his guardians easily and treats them as if they were his real parents, with blind love. He resembles a human being both visually and spiritually. No matter what happens, he is always fair and honest; that is the way he was programmed.
"Please make me a real boy?" ~ David, A.I
David is an advanced humanoid system equipped with computer vision and audio processing systems that mimic human eyes, voice, and ears. His software resembles the psyche of a small boy. He has an implemented layer responsible for abstract thinking; he is capable of using imagination and believes in fairy tales. Throughout the whole movie, he is looking for a fairy who will transform him into a real boy.

"Her" by Spike Jonze
Samantha is a voice assistant accompanying a young, lonely writer. Her basic role was supposed to be limited only to sorting files and sending emails. The assistant carried out her duties perfectly. She was capable of finding important messages among spam and unwanted newsletters.
She understood context and showed a real understanding of her user's needs—both business and spirit-related. After a while, her relationship with the user transitioned into a strange romance. She was equipped with all the desired attributes of a woman: sense of humor, beautiful voice, tact, and she really seemed to care.
"Falling in love is kind of like a form of socially acceptable insanity." ― Spike Jonze, Her
Samantha uses a dynamic learning mechanism. It's her greatest strength and allows her to better understand the user and adjust herself to best serve his needs. She collects information about the user and becomes smarter/more user-oriented by speaking to the user and analyzing his files.
She was programmed to be fully aware of her own humanity and has a full range of programmed emotions. She can be very convincing and full of compassion. I don't think she is fake.

Summary
In both previously mentioned movies, filmmakers portrayed AI as close to humans as possible. Both systems were the answer to unfulfilled desires of being loved and having children—elementary needs of each person.
Both AIs are always very honest and genuine. They are better versions of ourselves, created to help us deal with the problems of reality and bring relief in the hardest moments. Both directors wanted to portray AI as being like us, but lacking the whole range of negative emotions.
